turtle plant pot Dot's Turtle Flower PotHand thrown ceramic Weaverville, NC Hand thrown in the Blue Ridge Mountains every turtle one of a kind Dorothy "Dot" Callaway, 64 Potter & gardener, Weaverville NC. 38 years at the wheel. Her final winter batch. "My granddaughter held the finished turtle and asked: 'Grandma, does someone live in there?' Three weeks after I put it in the bed, a skink was sleeping underneath it. That's when I understood what I was actually making." Dorothy "Dot"
Hand-thrown on the wheel, 7" × 5" × 3.5"
For sedum, herbs, succulents
Frost-resistant, lasts decades
No two alike — like real animals
What's behind these planters isn't explained by the material. It's explained by the time.
Dot's mother threw pots — always. No class, no teacher. Clay on the table, hands in it. Dot joined in. At seven. At twelve. At some point she never stopped.
Dot throws in the winter months, when the garden rests. Each turtle takes four to six hours — from the first lump of clay to the finished, glazed form. No casting, no mold. The hand decides everything.
The ceramic shell casts shade, holds moisture — and creates a refuge for skinks, ground beetles, and solitary bees. What looks beautiful also brings the garden to life. That wasn't planned. It just happens.
Dorothy "Dot" Callaway, 64
Potter and gardener from Weaverville, North Carolina. Her husband Ray has been a beekeeper for 35 years — he's the one who first noticed a skink sheltering under one of her hand-thrown turtle planters on a hot July afternoon. That moment stuck with her. She's been making them ever since — 38 years, hundreds of turtles, thrown on the wheel, never sold until now. Her daughter Emily finally set up the shop. This is the final winter batch.
Mass-produced / Big box
